Managing a literacy block in an upper elementary classroom can sometimes feel like a juggling act. You want your students engaged and independent, but you also need space to pull small groups. That’s why I created a simple, clear R.E.A.D. station system that supports both students and teachers—without requiring a ton of prep.

What is the R.E.A.D. Station System?

R.E.A.D. stands for:

  • Respond to Reading
  • Enjoy a Good Book
  • Apply Skills
  • Develop Writing

Each letter connects to a station basket with low-prep tasks that rotate throughout the week. For example:

  • Respond to Reading might be a one-pager or story map
  • Apply Skills could include word work or vocabulary quilts
  • Develop Writing may be a short prompt or sentence practice
  • Enjoy a Good Book is always quiet, independent reading

How It Works in My Classroom

Every day, my students complete three 25-minute stations:

  1. Enjoy a Good Book (daily)
  2. Technology (daily)
  3. One rotating R.A.D. task (changes depending on the day)

I pull groups to my teacher table during this time, but the beauty of the system is that all students are working on the same type of task, just at their own level. For example, on a Respond to Reading day, one group may do a graphic organizer while another does a simple retelling activity. The task for the day is posted on the whiteboard, and students grab their materials from labeled baskets.

What’s Included in the R.E.A.D. Poster Set

  • 6 printable expectation posters (R.E.A.D. + Tech + Teacher Table)
  • Matching basket labels
  • A sample whiteboard layout for daily task display
  • Clean black-and-white design that blends beautifully into any classroom setup

I designed these posters to help students know exactly what’s expected, even when I’m working with small groups—and it helps make walk-throughs smoother, too!

Why Teachers Love It

  • Low prep
  • Clear expectations
  • Flexible structure
  • Great for grades 2–4
  • Supports classroom independence
