December is always a funny time in the classroom. Students are excited, tired, energetic, and checked out — all at the same time. And honestly? Sometimes we are too. After talking recently about finding joy in the little things, I’ve been trying to carry that same grace and gratitude into my classroom. Instead of chasing perfection, I’m leaning into simple routines that help me reset, refocus, and breathe a little easier this month. I promised myself I’d hold onto the small joys this season, even on the days I feel stretched thin — and that mindset has changed the way my classroom feels.

Here are the small shifts that are making a big difference:

1. Anchor the Day With One Predictable Routine

With testing, holidays, and schedule changes, consistency brings calm.

For us, that looks like:

  • A clear morning routine
  • A simple task that students can complete without directions
  • A quick 2-minute mindset moment (breathing, short quote, gratitude, etc.)

The goal isn’t to perfect the routine — it’s to give students something stable to land on when everything feels busy.

2. Focus Instruction on One High-Impact Skill

Right now, we’re honing in on Author’s Claim and preparing for the FAST assessment. Instead of trying to do everything, we’re doing one thing well.
This keeps lessons tighter, expectations clearer, and students less overwhelmed.

Little steps add up.

3. Review All Standards in Bite-Sized Ways

December is a perfect time for:

  • Quick partner tasks
  • 5–7 minute review cards
  • Short text snippets
  • Interactive standards-based videos

Small bursts keep students engaged and give you a clear picture of what needs reteaching.

4. Use Visuals to Keep Lessons Flowing

My secret weapon? Google Slides.
I use them daily to guide the lesson, reveal answers gradually, and keep us moving without losing momentum.
It’s simple, organized, and makes even busy days feel smoother.

5. Protect Joyful Moments

This is the big one. With all the pressure and deadlines, it’s easy to miss the joy. So I’ve been intentionally celebrating the small things:

  • A student proudly sharing their writing
  • A class nailing a tough skill
  • Someone being kind without being asked
  • A moment of laughter after a long morning

Those tiny moments add up and remind us why we’re here.

A December Reminder

You don’t have to overhaul your classroom to find peace this month.

Sometimes all it takes is:

  • one consistent routine
  • one focused skill
  • one breath
  • one joyful moment

A little bit of grace goes a long way — for our students and for ourselves.

Wishing you peace and balance today,

Rebecca Jeanette
