There are some prayers we speak out loud.
And then there are the prayers we barely whisper.
For years, I carried one quietly in my heart.
I had convinced myself that perhaps motherhood simply wasn’t part of my story. As the birthdays came and went, I learned to accept that life might look different than I had once imagined. Adoption crossed my mind. Foster care crossed my mind. I even found peace in believing that if God wanted it to happen, He would make it clear.
So I prayed a simple prayer.
“Lord, if this is meant for us, make it clear.”
Then I waited.
Not anxiously.
Not demanding an answer.
Just waiting.
Life continued as usual. I tended the garden, cleaned the house, planned lessons for school, read my Bible on the porch, and tried to be faithful in the ordinary.
Looking back now, I smile because while I was wondering if motherhood had passed me by, a new story had already begun.
I just didn’t know it yet.
When I finally took a pregnancy test, I stared at it in disbelief.
Two lines.
I took another.
Two lines again.
After years of thinking this moment might never come, I found myself asking questions that probably sound familiar to many women:
“Could it be wrong?”
“Should I take another test?”
“Is this really happening?”
As the days passed, my husband and I found ourselves talking about due dates, doctor’s appointments, and tiny details that had never seemed possible before. We remembered conversations we’d never shared with each other. We realized we had both quietly hoped for the same thing without ever saying it aloud.
Then came the first ultrasound.
The technician smiled and said everything was right on track.
And there, on the screen, was a little head.
A tiny arm.
A little hand.
A beating heart.

In that moment, everything changed.
The dream wasn’t just a possibility anymore.
It had become real.
A few days later, during worship at church, the congregation began singing Blessed Assurance. When the lyrics came—
“I sought the Lord, and He heard, and He answered…”
—I couldn’t hold back the tears.
Not because I suddenly understood everything.
Not because every fear disappeared.
But because I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
There are moments in life that remind us how little control we really have.
We plan.
We hope.
We wait.
And sometimes, unexpectedly, we receive a gift we had almost stopped expecting.
One verse has stayed with me throughout this season:
“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”
— 1 Samuel 1:27 (NIV)
Those words have taken on a meaning I never imagined they would.
Today, I’m almost four months pregnant.
Even writing those words feels surreal.
This journey has reminded me that faith isn’t always about receiving the answer we hoped for. Sometimes faith is simply continuing to pray, continuing to trust, and continuing to live faithfully while we wait.
I don’t know what every chapter ahead will hold.
But I know this:
Sometimes the prayers we’re most afraid to pray become the stories we’re most grateful to tell.
And sometimes, while we’re busy wondering if we’ve missed our chance…
God is already writing the next chapter.
Until next time, stay rooted in His promises
